“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
– Arthur C ClarkCellular phones are everywhere. Those ubiquitous little handheld devices are a boon to the tech-savvy businessperson—and yes, even us technophobes can learn to love them, too. Sometimes they might feel more like a digital leash than a handy convenience, but let’s face it; they really do save us a lot of time, energy and, more importantly, money.
As the power of these devices continues to grow at an exponential rate, the amount of time spent trapped in an office or traveling back and forth between job sites may dramatically decrease. With so-called “smart phones” like Blackberrys, the iPhone and the new Instinct, you have all the communication and file sharing ability of your desktop computer in the palm of your hand.
What used to be an intimidating and expensive extra for the busy businessperson is rapidly becoming an affordable necessity for just about everyone. The best part is they really aren’t that hard to figure out. I mean, if I can do it… With full-data plans now available for less than ever before, every businessperson should seriously consider picking up one of these handy little widgets and learning how to use it. Imagine being able to review files, spreadsheets and Word docs… surf the Internet to conduct some quick research, check your email, use GPS to help you get where you’re going, and so much more, all without having to be chained to a desk.
It’s called running your business instead of your business running you. Instead of having to hunch over a keyboard under fluorescent lights with the constant drone of the air conditioner, you can review and edit files, send and receive email and stay in constant contact with anyone involved in your business from the beach, your kid’s soccer game or anywhere else on the planet.
Shop around. Do your research. Find the device that best suits your needs. Take some time to learn how to maximize the potential of your new purchase and enjoy the benefits! It’s your life—and six ounces of plastic and glass could help you make the most of it.
This is wise business.
