Curb Appeal

Chris Bakeman PB, Chris Bakeman Realty LLC

Take an honest look at what buyers see when they approach your home.

If you are selling your home and want to receive top dollar, it’s important to get the buyers in the door. If your property is not overpriced, and you are still not getting people in the door, take an honest look at what buyers see when they approach your home.

Positive curb appeal is a must in today’s market: not only your own home’s curb appeal, but your neighbors’ as well.

I spoke with a realtor the other day who mentioned that one of her clients is having a difficult time selling because of the junk in the neighbor’s yard. My article back in December addressed the Maui Beautification Code; however, today I want to suggest simple ideas that may help your curb appeal and your neighbors.

Before you turn your neighbor over to the county, look at your own yard. It’s easy for me to judge others’ yards and then drive home and ignore the ugly plastic chair that has been sitting in front of my home for months. So ask a friend or a neighbor to give you their honest opinion of how your home looks from the street. Does your home look fresh, or dingy from the dust? Is the yard overgrown, or lush? Are trash cans, hoses, the barbeque grill and toys stowed away neatly, or spread all over the yard? Take care of your own yard first.

If your neighbor’s yard is a mess, get to know them and perhaps offer to help clean up. Perhaps your neighbor has become overwhelmed, so offering a hand in the yard, fixing the mailbox, or making a trip to the dump will let them know they are not alone. The Maui County Landfill offers recycle bins, yard waste disposal, a rubbish dump site and old appliances are accepted at SOS Metals Island Recycling off of Mokulele Highway.

Keeping Maui beautiful, clean, safe and welcoming is up to all of us. Why not start at home and in your own neighborhood?
