The University of Hawai‘i (UH) presents a miniseries called “The End of Cheap Energy” beginning with a showing of A Crude Awakening on Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Maui Community College Student Lounge (Pilina Building). One week later, on May 29, at the same time and location, Dr. Fred Duennebier from the UH Department of Geology and Geophysics will talk about future energy challenges we will face after fossil fuel resources are expended
Fossil fuels now provide about 90 percent of the energy we consume, and more than 95 percent of the energy required for transportation. We are coming to realize that our dependence on fossil fuels will be short-lived and have severe consequences, Duennebier said.
Duennebier said it is unlikely that alternative sources of energy, conservation and switching to renewables will allow us to sustain life as we know it, as there are no other energy sources or combinations of known sources that can replace fossil fuels.
