Just Wanna Have Fun?

Cyndi Lauper and Commander Cody are here to help.

Cyndi Lauper is set to make a big splash on stage at Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater on Friday, Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m., so grab your best glam/rock/pop/retro-new-wave outfit and get ready to rock with one of the premier women in music. Since her arrival in the ’80s with Girls Just Want to Have Fun, She Bop and Time After Time, no one performed like her, sang like her, or dressed like her—even in that decade of gaudy overkill. The voice is unforgettable and the songs are familiar, but everything about Cyndi Lauper is still as original as… well, as the original! Cyndi’s new album, The Body Acoustic, proves this. Both timeless and contemporary, the music taps into the essence of each song—classics as well as new material—with the vision, fearlessness and integrity that have always been her hallmark.

Tickets are $55, $65 and $75. Pre-show dinners, desserts and beverages will be available starting at 5:30 p.m. in the courtyard, with catering by Longhi’s.

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen will be dropping out of The Ozone on Thursday, Jan. 10, to play the Castle Theater at 7:30 p.m.… and there will be a dance floor! As always, the old Commander Cody will be behind the piano to lead the musical mayhem and controlled chaos, with Airmen band members Steve Barbuto on drums and vocals, Rick Mullen on bass, and Mark Emerick on lead guitar and vocals, along with pedal steel guitar wiz Don E. Curtis.

Since the band’s conception in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1968, and subsequent emigration to San Francisco just in time for the “Summer of Love,” the repertoire stretched from famously self-penned party anthems like Too Much Fun, Lost In The Ozone and Hot Rod Lincoln to old time rock-n-roll in 20 Flight Rock; redneck country and boogie-woogie in Truck Drivin’ Man, Beat Me Daddy To The Bar and Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette—basically, the entire essence of American roots music!

Tickets are $35, $40 and $45. Make an evening of it! Full bar service starts at 5:30 p.m., and pre-show dinners feature food selections by Mulligan’s at the Wharf. Book online at www.mauiarts.org or call 242-SHOW for tickets for these and all shows at The MACC.
