Call it coincidence, or call it a punchline, but the Maui Arts & Cultural Center will be hosting the following three “Z” shows in May: Jason Mraz on May 1; Brothers Caz(imero) on May 2; and Boz Scaggs on May 12.*
Jason Mraz is a hot young singer, songwriter and guitarist who, with his band, is bound to raise the roof on the Castle Theater on Thursday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. He’s traveled far from his Virginia hometown… all the way to the opening bill on the 2005–06 Rolling Stones tour! Mraz is an eclectic artist with multiple and varied stylistic influences, including pop, rock, folk, jazz, country, and hip hop/rap.
On Friday, May 2, the Brothers Cazimero come to the Castle Theater for the annual Maui Lei Day Concert. This year they have decided not to do their O‘ahu Lei Day concert, so this makes the Maui show a real treat! Robert and Roland Cazimero are consummate performers and masters of their crafts; their musicianship incorporates traditional hula and chant to produce a style integrally woven into the fabric of Hawaiian contemporary music. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., but this is a Ho‘onanea Series show so the pre-show festivities start at 5:30 p.m., to include hula and music in the courtyard along with purveyors of Hawaiian arts and crafts and lei.
Boz Scaggs brings his brand of bluesy rock to the Castle Theater on Monday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. Scaggs grew up in Texas immersed in rhythm and blues, soul music, early rock ‘n’ roll, and raw Delta and Chicago blues, then moved to San Francisco to join up with high school buddy Steve Miller’s Blues Band and took his part in the Bay Area scene that revolutionized rock ‘n’ roll. But he’s not done yet: about his latest release Fade Into Light, the music magazine Jazz Times lauds his “impeccably good taste and vocal otherworldliness that’s at once startling and arresting.” For this show, he has O‘ahu’s Matt Catingub Orchestra for another interesting turn of musical events.
To purchase tickets for these shows or any at The MACC, call the box office at 242-SHOW (7469) or visit www.MauiArts.org.
