Classics to Moderns

A special Mother’s Day event at Studio Maluhia.

In a special Mother’s Day event, the Ebb & Flow Ensemble—Scott Anderson on clarinet, Ignace Jang on violin, Maui composer Robert Pollock on piano and special guest James Warren on organ—will perform a “Classics to Moderns” program at Studio Maluhi in Waihe‘e on Saturday, May 10, at 4 p.m. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available.

Featured composers will include J. S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Paul Hindemith, Ernst Krenek, Elliott Carter, Edward T. Cone, Roger Sessions and Robert Pollock. The program includes the world premiere of E.T. Cone’s Page From A Diary, as well as numerous Hawai‘i premieres.

In 2009, Carter, America’s dean of composers, will celebrate his 100th birthday. He continues to be an active composer. Mendelsshohn’s 200th year will also be celebrated in 2009.

“The line between classic and modern becomes blurred…” commented Pollock, founder and director of Ebb & Flow Arts (E&FA). “Is Carter a classicist at 100, but Mendelssohn still a modernist at 200?”

This event is part of E&FA’s North South East West Festival 2008, cosponsored by E&FA with support from the AHS Foundation, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority/SPEP, John R. Halligan Charitable Fund, Yokouchi Foundation, Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture & Arts, Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation, Edward T. Cone Foundation BMI Foundation and private contributions.

E&FA) is a unique, nonprofit presenter of modern music and multimedia events.
