TangoFest Maui

A week of events dedicated to spreading the excitement, joy, fire and fun of Argentine tango.

The hot days of summer are here, but the nights are about to get even hotter as the 5th International TangoFest Maui gains momentum this week, culminating in a sizzling tango concert, “Inspiracion Del Tango,” on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Tangofest Maui, August 6–10, is a week of events dedicated to spreading the excitement, joy, fire and fun of Argentine tango.

“Inspiracion Del Tango” will feature world-renowned dancers such as Natalia Hills and Jorge Torres (current stars of the hit stage show Forever Tango), Facundo Posadas from Buenos Aires, Lizelot de Stigter from Europe, Bruce and Yoko Wee, Gawain Bantle, Rita O’Connor and other tango artists. This annual concert of dance and music has already become a tradition on Maui as the highlight of the international festival presented by Gawain Bantle and Tango Amor.

Natalia Hills was in the original cast of Forever Tango on Broadway and in London, and is the recipient of a Tony Award and a Drama Desk nomination for Best Choreography; born in Buenos Aires she has performed in major cities throughout the world.

Jorge Torres, amazing to behold on the dance floor, is a world-renowned tango choreographer, dancer and impresario who has studied with some of the most famous teachers of tango, has performed around the world, and was nominated for a Tony Award in choreography.

Lizelot de Stigter is a renowned dancer and esteemed teacher of tango in Europe, with a style and technique developed through work with tango legends. She also teaches throughout Europe.

Apart from Saturday’s stunning concert, more activities will fill the days and evenings: workshops/classes will be conducted during the festival by visiting and resident instructors, and evening dance and music sessions will be held in various locations.
