Gifted songwriter and singer to perform at The MACC.Lisa Loeb, “the girl with the cat-eye glasses,” who penned the hits Stay (I Missed You), I Do and Snow Day returns to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Castle Theater with more of the lyrical melodies and engaging, philosophical style that delights her loyal fan base!
In 1994, when Lisa Loeb’s breakout song Stay landed at No. 1 on the charts, it was a remarkable and unparalleled feat for an unsigned artist. Her friend and New York neighbor, Ethan Hawke, who starred in Reality Bites, helped get Stay on the soundtrack to that now-iconic film, then directed the music video which catapulted Loeb into national consciousness, with ensuing record deals and tours, Grammy nominations and Gold Records. The Reality Bites success was a lucky break, but she was already known as a hard working artist with years of practical and performing experience on New York’s vibrant club scene. The fact that Stay still resonates with people today is a testament to Loeb’s gift as a songwriter and storyteller.
Loeb spent her childhood in Dallas immersed in the arts: piano, guitar, music theory, classical and jazz training, dance lessons, acting lessons and an overall appreciation for artistic expression. Her parents thought their Brown-educated daughter might enter a more traditional profession, but Loeb had other aspirations. Convincing them about a viable music career helped her “live up to a certain level of professionalism. Trying to show them that, for me, music was the real thing. It was a challenge to rise to the occasion to make it a real career.” Independent, determined and savvy, she has continued to develop her vision and hone her artistic talents, to push herself and her career forward with creative zeal while carefully managing the business side.
In fact, Lisa Loeb has deftly parlayed her early success into a multi dimensional career encompassing film, television and music, now with eight CD releases, including the newest Purple Tape and Camp Lisa. She co-starred with Dweezil Zappa in a weekly culinary adventure for Food Network, then took an inspired look at finding love on the series No. 1 Single for E! Entertainment. She is also the voice of Spiderman’s gal pal on the MTV animated series. In film, she played opposite Geoffrey Rush in On Haunted Hill.
Come see what Lisa Loeb is up to now on Saturday, Aug. 16. Her special guest is Gail Swanson, Maui’s own favorite singer, songwriter and guitarist gal!
