Princess Ka‘iulani Festival

Bi-cultural event to feature Hawaiian laulau and Scottish shortbread recipe contests.

Isle of Maui Pipe Band will hold the Princess Ka‘iulani Festival at St. John’s Episcopal Church Grounds, 8992 Kula Highway in Keokea, on Saturday, Oct.18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event commemorates the life of Princess Victoria Kawekui Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Ka‘iulani Cleghorn (b.1875), heir-apparent during the reign of Queen Lili‘uokalani. Maui residents and visitors are welcome to celebrate the cultural aspects that the princess herself personified, held at one of the most peaceful, pastoral and awe-inspiring locations in Upcountry Maui.

The day-long event celebrates the princess’ Hawaiian and Scottish heritage, featuring entertainment including the Richard Ho‘opi‘i Family, Tropical Harps, Halau Hula Wehiwehi O Lei Lehua, Fiddler Lisa Gomes, Kula Kaiapuni Kekaulike, Isle of Maui Pipe Band, a historical fashion show by Princess Ka‘iulani Fashions. Kathy Collins and Hamish Douglas-Burgess of Mana‘o Radio will serve as event emcees.

Included in the days events are exhibits and presentations by local groups and historians, Hawaiian games, children’s contests and activities, vendors and food, all representing the two cultures.

Featured events include an exhibition hukihuki (tug-of-war) between Maui Police and Fire Departments, and classic Scottish events including men’s “Bonniest Knees” and ladies rolling pin and Wellie (boot) toss contests. Prizes will be given for the winners of each contest.

Traditional cooks are encouraged to enter the Best Laulau and Best Scottish Shortbread Contests. Winners will receive a trophy and prize. The contest is intended to help perpetuate cultural practices through the importance of food with two of the most loved and cherished dishes.

This event is sponsored by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and the County of Maui, with additional funding from Dowling Company Inc., A&B Foundation and support from Sen. J. Kalani English.

For more information, contest rules and entry forms, contact Norman Mizuno, event coordinator, at (808) 573-1130 or visit the Maui Pipe Band Website at www.isleofmauipipeband.com.
