Jupiter Quartet and Ebb & Flow Arts Ensemble kick off the season’s Tune-In Series.Classical music lovers will enjoy the exciting lineup of two class acts this week at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. Award-winning Jupiter Quartet, a particularly intimate chamber ensemble, will perform works by Beethoven, Haydn, and Bartok on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. Then come back on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m. to hear New Music works by the renowned composers and performers of the Ebb & Flow Arts Ensemble. Both performances kick-off “The MACC Presents…” 2008–09 Tune-In Series.
Jupiter Quartet was named by Chamber Music of America as the “best rising string quartet” and features violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel and cellist Daniel McDonough. The group’s name references the happiness and strength attributed to the Roman god Jupiter… and the reviews on this quartet are indeed out of this world! “One of the strongest young string quartets in the country,” said the NY Sun. Other New York concert reviews remark on the intensity of spirit, sure to be their signature in an upcoming stellar career!
Jupiter Quartet’s Maui program includes the following popular works: Quartet in F Major, Op. 77, No. 2 by Haydn; Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102 by Bartok; and Quartet in A minor, Op. 132 by Beethoven. The group is known for spreading enthusiasm for classical music, and once you hear them live, you also will agree!
On Sunday, Ebb & Flow Arts Ensemble, with Robert Pollock as director, will present the world premiere of a commissioned piece by Scandinavia’s leading composer, Per Nørgård of Denmark, who will be on hand to describe his composition.
Other featured performers include the Ebb & Flow Ensemble: Scott Anderson, clarinet/bass clarinet; Ignace Jang, violin; Mark Votapek, cello; and Robert Pollock, piano. Harpist Tine Rehling (Denmark); pianist Anne Marie Abildskov (Denmark); Anders Beyer, director of Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen and a leading expert in Danish contemporary music; Honolulu Symphony performers Eric Shin, percussion; and Claire Starz, flute, as well as members of University of Hawai‘i Contemporary Music Ensemble directed by Dr. Thomas Osborne.
Ebb & Flow Arts’ Maui performance features the premiere of Nørgård’s work, Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking. The concert also includes works by George Walker, Carl Nielsen, Astor Piazzolla and the world premiere of Robert Pollock’s Trio #7, Vanishing Boundaries.
Anders Beyer, director of Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, will moderate a pre-concert discussion at 4 p.m.
