Maui Youth and Family Services (MYFS), Malama Family Recovery Center and Aloha House have agreed to attempt to form a partnership that will merge the three organizations by mid-2009. Peter Cahill, a Maui attorney and MYFS chair, will reside as president for the first year while the three boards attempt to function as one while Jud Cunningham will act as CEO. Malama Family serves substance-abusing women who are pregnant, while MYFS assists children and young adults with a variety of services including substance prevention and treatment along with foster care services. Aloha House has provided adults for over 30 years with substance abuse treatment in Maui. The three organizations seek to collaborate, rather than compete, during the current struggles in the charity world, as funding tightens and the workloads become heavier. The merger expects to provide better service while lowering costs for the community.
