Long’s Drug Stores Corp. and its 38 Hawai‘i locations announced Tuesday, Aug. 12, that it will be bought by CVS Caremark Corp. for $2.9 billion. CVS will attain Longs’ 521 retail drugstores in Hawai‘i, Nevada, Arizona, California, as well as its Rx America subordinate. Most stores in these states will have names switched by the end of next year, except Hawai‘i. The well-known Long’s has been a staple in the Hawai‘i’s business world for more than 50 years and CVS will keep the Long’s name throughout the state. In recent years, Long’s faced ridicule within the industry for using outdated technology and failing to effectively compete with rivals CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens. As CVS takes over, consumers can expect to see changes in print, television and Internet advertising of the Long’s brand.
