One-way fares on the ferry traveling between the islands of Maui and Moloka‘i rose from $42.40 to $68.40 on Friday, Aug. 15. Sea Link (which has operated the ferry since 1988) blamed the increase on rising fuel costs. The $26 up-charge will affect adult one-way tickets between Lahaina Harbor and Moloka‘i’s Kaunakakai Harbor, which runs twice daily. Tickets for children under the age 12 will be $47.20. The Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission will hold public hearings on Aug. 27 and 28 to discuss allowing Sea Link to impose a fuel surcharge. Moloka‘i residents who commute to Maui are projected to have charges covered. According to Sea Link President David Jung, since the last price increase in 1995, the cost of fuel for two round trips has risen from $500 to $2,200 a day.
