Just four weeks after its parent company, Diamond Resorts International, fired 34 employees after the North Beach Grill closed, the Ka‘anapali Beach Club (KBC) laid off 20 workers Tuesday, Aug.19. Housekeeping was hit the hardest as nearly 40 percent of its staff was let go. The KBC has changed into a full timeshare operation, which typically doesn’t provide daily housekeeping. Services will be limited to towels and trash only with once-a-week cleaning, yet wholesale and “direct-pay” customers will still have daily services. Members of the hotel workers’ union, Unite Here Local 5, has been negotiating for hundreds of employees at KBC since they have been working under an extended agreement since their contract expired at the beginning of 2008. The layoffs are considered a “slap in the face” by the workers’ union since it took place during contract negotiations.
