Although spending continues to decline on Maui, Kula’s Surfing Goat Dairy reported their best month ever since starting business in April 2002. Three of their best months ever have actually been within the last four months, so it’s no surprise that they have been nominated as one of two finalists for “Retailer Business of the Year 2008” for Maui. The dairy enjoyed a 20 percent increase in their sales compared to August of 2007, while the dairy tours increased by 53 percent. Surfing Goat owner Thomas Kafsack believes that the Superferry has had a positive impact on business with its two round trips a day for four days a week, which has sent their “tours and sales to folks from O‘ahu soaring.” Kafsack is also excited about the new Whole Foods store opening in O‘ahu. Surfing Goat Dairy received their first order recently and it alone was already about 20 percent of their entire wholesale revenue from which they made in 2008 thus far.
