Maui Snorkel Charters Inc. will have to pay a total of $396,915 to the state for damaging Molokini coral in a settlement deal approved by the Board of Land and Natural Resources on Friday, Sept. 12. The dive company, which does business as Maui Dive Shop, was fined a $386,297 administrative fine—the largest ever issued by the state in an incidence involving coral damage within a marine life conservation district. It must also pay $10,618 in administrative costs encountered by the Department of Land and Natural Resources during its investigation. The destruction took place from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6, 2006, when the 32-foot boat Kai Anela sank due to the entanglement of one of its bow lines in the engine. Fifteen people had to jump into the waters near the Molokini crater. All were rescued, but a reported 661 to 871 coral colonies were destroyed or injured in the process. The dive company must pay $250,000 immediately, followed by three equal payments of the remainder over the next three years.
