Garrett and Melanie Marrero of the Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) have had quite a year. They received the “Business with Green Program” award at the “Who’s Keeping Hawai‘i Green” event in September, and recently strengthened business by starting to supply the new Whole Foods on O‘ahu with their authentic Maui microbrews. MBC is a truly local and green business on Maui. The cans are made on O‘ahu and local artists provide designs. “Spent grain” from beer production is donated to local farmers for cattle feed and the company is extremely proud to produce actual local beer as 100 percent of their products are made in Hawai‘i at the seven-barrel brewpub in Kahana as well as the 25-barrel full production brewery and canning facility in Lahaina. Their brewpub was also renovated with complete solar energy installation and biodiesel from the pub’s fryer is utilized in all of its company vehicles. Last week, MBC came to a distribution agreement with Stone Brewing Co. where MBC’s tasty beverages will now be available to the beer drinkers all over Southern California.
