Limit Development in Makena

Commentary contributed by Barbara & Michael Gach · Kihei

Refute development to conserve the beauty of South Maui’s land and sea.

As a Maui residential family, we envision keeping our beaches beautiful and unpolluted, our infrastructure free and clear—by limiting development, especially in the Makena area.

As residents of South Kihei, we would like to see a limit on development of shopping centers and luxury homes in our area. We love the Makena beaches because they are still pristine, and we want to do what we can to keep it that way.

Any large development in Makena is naturally going to affect the quality of the water, the reefs and the natural landscape, so please refute the Makena development to conserve the beauty of South Maui’s land and sea.

Join us in saying “no” to the Makena development project, to stop urban sprawl. The idea that this project is necessary to keep the construction industry alive doesn’t hold water, since this project would recruit workers from the Mainland.

As one of hundreds of local condo owners, we will continue to support local workers, and put them to work without this project. We consciously chose to buy condos in older complexes to minimize the ecological impact of building new structures. There is plenty of work for people to do here on our island to remodel and repair our existing buildings. Developing Makena would set a precedent to pass other huge developments, resulting in urban sprawl throughout South Maui.

In an emergency, we already have a problem to efficiently evacuate South Maui safely, to avoid danger in the event of fire, flooding or other possible disasters. The impact of this development project would further compound this problem.

Elected officials, we urge you to put a limit on Maui’s growth—people are counting on you to do the right thing by conserving the beauty of our gorgeous island. By limiting growth, we’ll protect the sacred beauty of South Maui’s land and sea.
