The Garden Party

Harlan Hughes

Maui Academy of Performing Arts to hold 20th fun fundraiser.

The Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of  the Garden Party on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 5 p.m., and you and all your friends and family 21 and over are invited. This is the 19th year the Yokouchi Family has graciously hosted this casual, elegant, fun-raising fundraiser on the lawn of their Wailuku Estate, adjacent to the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku.

Maui Academy of Performing Arts is an educational, performing arts organization for youth and adults, currently reaching 50,000 people annually. For over 30 years. MAPA’s mission has been “Enriching individuals, building community and connecting our world through the performing arts.”

The Garden Party is a celebration of the arts, including exceptional cuisine from many of Maui’s favorite restaurants, “fresh art” painted as you watch and live jazz. There will also be live and silent auctions. All the proceeds from the event go to benefit MAPA’s education and performance programs for Maui’s youth. The dress for this “garden-elegant” event is just that—casual-elegant dresses and hat for the ladies, and best aloha shirt and hat for the guys. On a warm, sunny day at the Yokouchi Family Estate, you’ll be glad you wore a hat.

The “Chef’s Festival” has always been a major highlight of the Garden Party, and is one of the chefs’ favorite events as well. Many of Maui’s restaurants and their chefs have been on hand presenting their culinary arts for over a decade now.

Alan Jahns of JMD Beverages has brought in an impressive assortment of wines—to be pared with the chefs’ creations—donated by the following wineries: Saintsbury; Carneros; Babcock Vineyards & Winery; Santa Rita Hills; Kaena Wines; Peachy Canyon; Paso Robles; Honig Winery; Miner Family; Seghesio Family Vineyards & Winery; Karma Sparkling Wines; A to Z Wineworks; Rex Hill Vineyards & Winery; Kaiken, Argentina; Small Vineyards Imports, Italy; and Rudi Wiest Selections, Germany.

The ever-popular Si-lent Art and Gift Auction adds an exhilarating component to the day as participants bid for extravagant goods, delectable dining and exciting excursions. The event’s ambiance will be enhanced by the music of Moondance again this year. Jim Howlett excels on vocals and guitar, and Rudy Esquer on saxophone, with their masterfully harmonized fusion of jazz-based blues.

All this for $55 is a great deal, and the money supports a great organization. Tickets for the adult-only event are $55 in advance, $65 at the door, and include all food and beverages served at the event. Maui’s “foodies,” wine aficionados and supporters of the arts will truly think they have donated to MAPA… and gone to heaven. VIP tables with service for eight are also available for $1,000. While you sit in the shade in the company of your friends, food and wine will be served at your VIP table.

Tickets are available for purchase at the MAPA office at 81 N. Church St., the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center customer service kiosk, The Nail Shop in Kihei, Island Soap & Candle at Ma‘alaea Center and all Café O’Lei restaurants. Tickets can also be purchased online at the MAPA Website: www.mauiacademy.org.
