Congratulations! - Waipuna Chapel in Kula celebrated its 25th anniversary on Sunday with a large gathering and a feast including yams, kalua pig and all the fixins. There were games for the youth, a jumping castle for the kids and shave ice for everyone. The spirit was overflowing.
The Grinch Comes to Hallow’een - Lauren Burgess of Mermaids Maui and a loyal Maui OnStage volunteer won the costume contest at the Maui Pops “Spooktacular” last year as a compelling and fabulously ghoulish “Corpse Bride.” This year, she came as a comely Alice in Wonderland, but because she won last year, she was disqualified from competing this year. Suppose the Lahaina people decided to do that to perennial winners The Front Street Regulars? Lauren and her husband Steve had a great time on the West Side with their daughter and five Seabury friends. They came in second at the Wharf Cinema Center’s annual Ghoulish Gala Karaoke Costume Contest as Jack Sparrow and his pirate wench.
New York City, Here We Come - Speaking of food, Maui’s favorite chef, Bev Gannon, is in a New York state of mind. She cooked for the publishing staff at the Condé Nast building (all 19 floors) on Nov. 13, and at the James Beard House on Nov. 14. You can catch Bev preparing quick and easy Thanksgiving recipes on Nov. 21 with Matt Lauer on the NBC Today Show.
Edgy Tunes - Uncle Dirty (Jimmy C., Kit Hain, Patrick Moser and John Ness, with help from Catfish John Tisdell) have released their latest CD Alien in a Bottle. It’s an eclectic array of originals with familiar rock and countrified tunes laced with some pretty edgy poetry. Three tunes, Old Fashioned Screw, End the Bush Regime and Too Comfortable with War are cogent comments about our current Middle East debacle/adventure/liberation (depending on your position). Others such as Faker, Almost and Mile High Club are for adults only. Check them out at www.uncledirty.net.
Corndogs Anyone? My late wife’s favorite thing at the County Fair was the corn dogs on a stick. Now, you don’t have to wait a year for a corn dog. Hot Dogs on a Stick is putting out a great and relatively healthy turkey hot dog on a stick at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center in Kahului. Their patented coating is muy ono, the fresh sugar-free lemonade really hits the spot, and the colorful retro car-hop costumes are quite attractive.
