This past month or so, I read a couple of articles in The Maui News about medical marijuana being available in vending machines and how Rep. Bertram is trying to allow the growth of medical marijuana in Maui. I support these projects and the decriminalization of marijuana, as well as the growth of industrial hemp to replace many synthetic materials.
Marijuana is often referred to as “weed” and we know it grows well in Hawai‘i. If we want to keep Hawai‘i in agriculture, we should really look into medical and industrial hemp as a legitimate solution.
An April 29, 2006, article in The Economist states: “If (marijuana) were unknown, and bio-prospectors were suddenly to find it in some remote mountain crevice, its discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough. Scientists would praise its potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at its rich pharmacopoeia—many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body.”
