I went to the GPAC meeting at Kaunoa Senior Center a week or so ago. I was pleasantly surprised to hear people talking about keeping the land in agriculture, not promoting more subdivisions. Yet I was surprised that some were speaking about making “rural” a new zone to replace “unuseable agriculture lands.”
There is really a need to keep as much property in ag-zoning and use as possible. The reason for this is twofold: The transient vacation rental (TVR) lands were unauthorized and used for business, when in fact, they were ag-usable lands. The other issue is the ag lands that have not been in ag can always be brought back to use.
Let’s keep building the spaces and mindset for a self-sustaining Maui that is not dependent on the tourists’ dollar.
