Maui Island Plan Workshop

Kula Community Association meeting to prepare Upcountry residents for input on islandwide plan.

The General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC), now reviewing the Maui Island Plan, will hold two Upcountry meetings to discuss the islandwide plan on Thursday, May 15, and on Saturday, May 17. GPAC is seeking community and public input on the Maui Island Draft Plan, which was prepared by the Maui County Planning Department.

”We need to know what the residents want the future of Maui Island to be like,” said GPAC Chair Tom Cannon.

To assist and prepare the public to make constructive suggestions and contributions, the Kula Community Association’s General Meeting on Tuesday, May 6, will present the “Upcountry Workshop for the Maui Island Plan” at the Kula Community Center from 7 to 9 p.m. All Upcountry residents, including Ha‘iku, Kula, Makawao and Pukalani, are urged to attend.

County Planner David Michaelson and Upcountry GPAC Members Warren Shibuya and Dick Mayer will highlight the major components of the plan, which includes maps, policies and proposed actions. Residents will then be encouraged to ask questions about the Island Plan so that they will be able to testify effectively the following week when the GPAC holds its two Upcountry public meetings.

The proposed Draft Plan explores important issues, such as types of communities desired, transportation, water-use, location of future developments, agricultural and rural lands, and the preservation of a high-quality environment.

Kula Community Association President Gina Flammer said, “Let’s not have others tell us what changes should take place and what are the important issues. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our Upcountry residents to look at planning issues that will go beyond the Upcountry region to cover our whole island.”

The Kula Community Association’s mission is to encourage both a deeper understanding of changes taking place on Maui and the creation of plans to prepare for our island’s future.

Refreshments will be served. Call 878-1874 for more information.
