Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. (MEO) will qualify seniors 60 and over and distribute $50 coupons to those deemed eligible starting May 15. In order to qualify, seniors must be at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level—with individual earnings of less than $22,126 annually. The coupons must be spent between June 1 and September 30.
In order to qualify, seniors should bring proof of income, such as their social security statement or retirement income and photo identification. Native Americans need to submit a birth certificate to be eligible. All MEO offices on all islands will be open to take applications and distribute coupons beginning May 15. MEO will also take applications and distribute coupons on June 7 and 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Maui Mall Farmers’ Market.
Nearly 5,000 Maui seniors are expected to receive coupons for the purchase of “fresh” and locally grown produce and herbs. The coupons can only be used at fresh produce outlets certified by MEO in accordance with program guidelines.
MEO has been granted nearly $274,000 and intends to distribute more than 95 percent of that money directly to seniors. For more information on the program, call MEO Community Services 249-2970. Farmers who want to participate in the program should contact Agnes Groff at 249-2990, ext. 231.
