Growing Dreams

Trisha Smith

A day of fragrant fun to support MYFS.

The Four Seasons Resort in Wailea will once again host a day of visual and fragrant fun, and all for a good cause. As Maui Youth and Family Services Inc.’s (MYFS) signature event, the Growing Dreams Floral and Fashion Extravaganza will celebrate its eighth anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is a beautiful and exciting event for a great agency,” said Growing Dreams Chairperson Jennifer Lake. “Times for charity have been more challenging, yet people still continue to be really generous. It’s remarkable.”

According to Lake, the event is “a win-win situation for everyone, as contributing to this event is not only tax-deductible and a great way to advertise for donors, but also great for humanity.”

MYFS is a comprehensive social services agency with a goal to “build better lives with Hawai‘i's families.” Over the last 30 years, it has thrived on assisting adolescents and families, including foster care and prevention and treatment for substance abuse. Beginning last month, MYFS, along with Malama Family Recovery Center and Aloha House, agreed to combine forces to become Maui’s first triple nonprofit merger by mid-2009.

At Saturday’s event, Dutch-born designer, entertainer and educator Rene Van Rems will return as a guest floral designer, presenting his showcase, “East Meets West—Island Inspirations.”

This floral connoisseur has been influential in incorporating European influence with American design and has educated all over the world, earning several floral design awards and the opportunity to publish books on his expertise.

“I think in Maui, there’s been a great fusion in style in the design world,” said Van Rems. “I thought it would be great to do something this year that really showcases tropical flowers mixed in with Mainland flowers, island flowers and worldly natives.”

Attendees can acquire Van Rems’ exquisite arrangements through the live and silent auctions taking place throughout the day.

“In my experiences, the people that come to these events are usually fantastic human beings who enjoy beauty and believe in the greater quality of life and giving back to the community,” he said.

New features at this year’s event include a Floral Shoppe and a “Rubber Duckie Pond,” where guests can purchase a duck and receive a stylish grab bag.

“There will also be a new award given to honor a selected member of the community who has been a hero when it comes to service,” said Lake.

When the event started eight years ago, it was all about the flowers… but gradually a fashion show was added to compliment the festivities. Chico’s will exhibit its latest fashion trends and invite guests to use various discounts at the store located at The Shops at Wailea. Ten percent of the proceeds from items purchased will be donated to MYFS.

Paradise Flowers Farms will also present a hands-on workshop hosted by Van Rems on Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center from 1 to 4 p.m. to benefit MYFS. He will instruct Euro-style arrangements, bridal bouquets and provide attendees with advice on how to be profitable in the floral design industry.

“There are so many ways people can contribute this year while treating themselves to beauty,” said Lake. “It’s sure to be an exciting weekend!”

Tickets and tables for the Growing Dreams event may still be available. For more information, contact Maui Youth and Family Services at (808) 579-8414 or visit www.myfs.org.
