New book criticizes governor and Superferry.Authors Koohan Paik and Jerry Mander will speak about and sign copies of The Superferry Chronicles on Monday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. at Maui Community College (Science 12), Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m. at Borders Books & Music on Dairy Road in Kahului and at 7 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center on Hana Highway near Pa‘ia.
The Superferry Chronicles is the first definitive account of the history of the Hawai‘i Superferry project—from its inception and its exemptions from environmental law to the Supreme Court ruling requiring an Environmental Impact Statement—and the governor’s special session of the legislature to overturn that ruling. Meticulously researched by award-winning Kaua‘i filmmaker Koohan Paik and Jerry Mander, “the patriarch of the antiglobalization movement” (New York Times), the book challenges the viability of the enterprise from the get-go and accuses Gov. Linda Lingle of serving the interests of a single corporation by manipulating state and federal agencies toward doubtful approvals of an unsustainable project.
Copies of the just-released book will be available, and are also for sale at Borders, Maui Marketplace and from Koa Books.
