Composting Workshop Offered

On Saturday, Aug. 9, and the second Saturday of every month, a composting class will be held at the MOA Center, 164 Kamehameha Ave. in Kahului from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

A large percentage of what is bagged and sent to the landfill is organic material that can be made into compost. But yard trimmings are valuable resources that can easily be reused in your own backyard by composting. When you practice composting, you will recycle yard waste and kitchen scraps, reduce waste going to our landfills, and develop healthy and beautiful lawns and gardens. Composting creates rich soil and stronger plants, reduces erosion and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, uses free and available resources, increases the life of our landfill, cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions and reduces global warming—and it’s easy to do.

Those who would like to compost, but don’t have a garden, can compost junk mail and food scraps to worms. Red wiggler composting worms quietly and efficiently make the richest compost possible.

Call Wilma Nakamura at 573-3911 for more information or to register for a workshop. Compost workshops can also be arranged for groups and organizations.

This workshop is partially funded by the County of Maui, Dept. of Public Works, Recycling Section. ?
