Homes built by green standards are healthier, more comfortable, sustainable, cost-effective and efficient. The water-saving tips you’ve been reading during the past weeks have been suggested by the Building Industry Association (BIA) of Hawai‘i’s BuiltGreen program. Many builders, especially on O‘ahu, are voluntarily using Hawai‘i BuiltGreen to make their homes more comfortable, sustainable and efficient. A “green” home will also be cheaper to operate and healthier to live in.
The Hawai‘i BuiltGreen program assigns points for various actions which builders can take. Many Hawai‘i BuiltGreen homes are featured in BIA’s annual Parade of Homes and can receive up to a three-star rating for compliance with the Hawai‘i BuiltGreen Checklist. The checklist identifies strategies which offer durability, conserve materials, focus on health and indoor air quality, provide energy efficiency and comfort, and protect site features and natural functions.
