The Maui News - Several areas across Maui County were without power for several hours on Saturday, March 15, resulting from two burned transmission lines on Waiko Road that were blown together by high winds, according to Maui Electric Company spokeswoman Kaui Awai-Dickson. Power was restored soon after it went out around 2:20 p.m. to much of Central Maui and Upcountry, but it continued to be out in parts of Wailuku until about 5 p.m. Power was also out in Pa‘ia and Lahaina. Traffic lights were black along many streets, including Ka‘ahumanu Avenue. Police managed traffic at several intersections. Some motorists didn’t stop at intersections that were left without traffic signals, said Maui County Information Officer Mahina Martin. Officials were concerned enough about the problem to issue a reminder to motorists that when traffic lights are not functioning, drivers should always treat intersections as if they are four-way stops.
