The Fire and Public Safety Commission announced its selection of Fire Captain Jeffrey A. Murray as the new Maui County fire chief. A unanimous decision named Murray as the head of the 300-plus-member department, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Fire Chief Carl Kaupalolo. Murray, is an 18-year member of the fire department is based out of the Kahului fire station. He has served as the team leader for the department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team and has worked in 12 of the 14 districts. Prior to joining the county, Murray served for six years in the U.S. Air Force as a member of the crash and structural crew. The selection ends a six-month search by the commission, and Murray’s appointment will take effect on April 15. He will be formally introduced to the commission at its next scheduled meeting on April 2.
