The Maui News - After several weeks of sparse rainfall and falling levels in Upcountry reservoirs, county water officials are hoping for rain in what still should be a wet season. “Weather conditions have been abnormally dry for this early in the year, and this is a big concern for us,” said Director of Water Supply Jeff Eng. But Upcountry, where residents were ordered to cut back water use by 10 percent last summer during an extended drought, average daily water consumption for the week of April 17–23 was 7.53 million gallons (mg)—just 1.37 mg more than the average daily amount a week earlier. On Friday, April 25, the 30-mg Waikamoi Reservoirs remained dry and the 100-mg Kahakapao Reservoirs dropped their available supply from 51.6 mg on April 18 to 44 mg on Friday. Water levels in the 50-mg Pi‘iholo Reservoir fell from 42 mg to 36 mg in the same period of time. Eng said water officials are bracing themselves for the summer’s drier months. “I am worried that consumption will skyrocket as the dry conditions continue,” he said.
