The Honolulu Advertiser - On Wednesday, April 30, an anti-statehood group calling itself the Hawaiian Kingdom Government locked the gates of ‘Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu. The group said it would occupy the palace grounds indefinitely and start carrying out the business of what it considered to be the legitimate government of the Hawaiian Islands. After several hours, group members agreed to reopen the gates of the palace but remained on the grounds, saying they would stay until 5 p.m. and return the next day. Although they did return the following day, the group did not chain the gates of the historic palace or deny access to employees, tourists or the general public. Instead, members and supporters of the group occupied a corner of the palace grounds, vowing to return to conduct the business of a sovereign Hawai‘i.
