The Maui News - State aquatics biologists last week announced a proposal to track fishing activities in Kahului Harbor to record data on types of fish caught and the amount of harbor use by recreational fishers. According to Division of Aquatics Resources Educational Specialist Russell Sparks, “We want to know how many people are fishing in the area, and we want to get some idea of how successful their fishing effort is as a way of gauging the need for management there.” The proposal would amend state fisheries management rules for Kahului Harbor to require recreational fishers to report their catches from within the harbor waters. It would be the first time recreational fishers in Hawai‘i would be required to report their ocean catch, although freshwater fishers are now required to report catches from O‘ahu and Kaua‘i streams and reservoirs. The proposed rules will be presented at a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at Lihikai Elementary School.
