The Honolulu Star-Bulletin - After a second Maui visitor drowned in waters off Makena State Beach last week, residents renewed complaints about government delays in posting lifeguards on the shoreline. Although funds were authorized by the state Legislature in mid-2007, there are no lifeguards posted in the Makena area—Little Beach and Big Beach—who could warn visitors to avoid the water on dangerous days. Residents have lobbied for lifeguard service for several years, and there have been at least four deaths in waters off the state beach. According to Maui County Parks Director Tamara Horcajo, county attorneys are reviewing an agreement to take care of the lifeguard services for the state.
