The Maui News - The Hawai‘i Legislature last week approved a $7 million appropriation for a new multipurpose center at Maui High School—the first permanent structure on the campus in nearly two decades. Maui High School Principal Randy Yamanuha said the new multipurpose center will give his campus a chance to upgrade its technology infrastructure and increase classroom space for its 1,725 students. In addition, Yamanuha said he envisioned opening the multipurpose center to the general public for evening meetings and in cases of emergency shelter. Last summer, when a massive brush fire shut down Honoapi‘ilani Highway, stranded visitors and residents were housed overnight in the Maui High gymnasium. Yamanuha said the new multipurpose center could be used for the same purpose.
