The Maui News - Maui Democrats elected new leaders, honored members and passed resolutions on Saturday, May 3, at the annual Maui County Democratic Party Convention at the Kahili Golf Course. Party members honored state Rep. Bob Nakasone, who represents Kahului and lower Pa‘ia, for his accomplishments as councilmember and legislator and Maui County Council Chairman Riki Hokama for his record of support for Democratic Party principles. Community Work Day Chief Jan Dapitan was given the party’s environmental award for her years of work in organizing community cleanups. Barry and Stella Rivers received a meritorious service award for their work with the Maui Film Festival. The Maui Democrats adopted 100 resolutions, including those in support of gray water recycling programs, revenue from liquor licensing fees for substance abuse education, prevention and treatment and a request for support for a North Shore heritage park in Pa‘ia.
