The Maui News - A large $2,000 redwood sign emblazoned with the greeting “Welcome to Pa‘ia, Maui’s Historic Plantation Town” located on Hana Highway on the outskirts of Pa‘ia, was reported missing since Tuesday, May 6. According to Pa‘ia Main Street Association Chairwoman Lisa Starr, “We don’t really know what really happened. One of the support posts is upright. The other is knocked over.” Starr went to the site to investigate and said the sign looked like it may have been knocked over from the position of the posts. She combed the nearby bushes for the sign or its remains, but found nothing. Starr said the missing sign was “quite new,” and it had replaced a previous sign that had been stolen. Anyone with information about the missing sign may call Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of people responsible for felony crimes. Theft of the $2,000 sign would constitute second-degree theft, a Class C felony carrying a potential five-year prison term and a maximum $10,000 fine.
