The Maui News - Maui’s marketing effort will focus on more international visitors, as well as targeted groups like “romance” travelers, as the tourism industry continues to slide, Maui Visitors Bureau Executive Director Terryl Vencl said on Friday, Aug. 22. Speaking during a meeting of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, Vencl said she was looking at strengthening ties with Japan and reaching new markets in China and Korea. She said she saw more opportunities with international visitors, who might see Hawai‘i and Maui as more attractive now that the U.S. dollar is weak, as well as specialty markets like “romance” travelers spending on weddings, honeymoons and anniversaries. “We need to fish where the fish are,” she said. While almost all domestic markets are down this summer, visitors from Canada were up 18 percent in June, she said. European arrivals are also up. MVB has printed brochures and marketing materials in Japanese, Chinese and Korean as part of its outreach to more Asian markets.
