The Associated Press - On Monday, Sept. 22, federal agents arrested 21 illegal immigrant workers at a luxury condominium construction site in Ka‘anapali. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 12 men from Mexico, eight from Brazil and one from Slovakia. They are currently undergoing deportation proceedings. The arrests marked the second straight month federal agents have arrested illegal immigrant workers at the Honua Kai construction site in Ka‘anapali. On Aug. 20, agents arrested 23 people working for three different companies, including 13 for Global Stone Inc. “Yesterday’s operation is part of ICE’s ongoing efforts to target employers and employees who violate our nation’s hiring laws,” said Wayne Wills, special agent in charge of the agency’s office of investigations in Hawai‘i. The agents coordinated the arrests with LEDCOR Hawai‘i, the general contractor for the Honua Kai project, and the Maui Police Department assisted in the raid. U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo said some companies feel they can plead ignorance about their employees. But he warned them not to. “I strongly advise them to think again, because if there is enough evidence, we will aggressively pursue all available remedies to address this issue,” Kubo said in a news release. Last week’s raid is the latest in a series on illegal immigrant workplaces and homes this year.
