The Maui News - The state Department of Health is advising Hawai‘i consumers to discard or return White Rabbit Candy because it may be contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical normally used as a resin. The state has also told retailers to remove the product from store shelves. White Rabbit Creamy Candy is sold in 8- and 16-ounce packages. It was distributed by wholesalers to retail stores in Hawai‘i, California, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington State. The candy has a logo of a white rabbit on the front with the words “White Rabbit” on its package. Other flavors, including chocolate, coconut, coffee, red bean, corn, lychee, mango and strawberry, are sold in 7-ounce packages. No illnesses associated with eating the candy have been reported so far. But in China, four infants have died and thousands are reported ill after they were fed melamine-laced milk products. The chemical mimics proteins and may be added to boost apparent protein levels of diluted milk. Consumers can call (650) 697-6633 for more information.
