The Maui News - County officials announced last week they would seek a legal opinion before deciding on a challenge to Maui County Council candidate Sol Kaho‘ohalahala’s Lana‘i City residency. County Clerk Roy Hiraga said he received Kaho‘ohalahala’s written response to the challenge on Friday, Oct. 3, but the response raised “legal questions,” leading him to consult with Corporation Counsel Brian Moto before making a decision. Kaho‘ohalahala finished first in a five-way primary race for the Maui County Council’s Lana‘i residency seat, and will advance to the Nov. 4 election with runner-up John Ornellas. After the primary, four people filed written challenges to Kaho‘ohalahala’s eligibility, questioning whether he actually lives at his family home in Lana‘i City, and saying it is widely understood that he lives with his wife in Lahaina. Kaho‘ohalahala has previously said his wife owns the Lahaina home, and that his family’s home on Fraser Avenue is his legal residence. Council candidates are elected at-large, but must live in the districts they are running to represent.
