Who Should Get the East Maui Stream Water?
Because the decision will affect so many residents, activities and companies, the Kula Community Association will present an informational forum entitled “Who Should Get the East Maui Stream Water?” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the Kula Community Center.
All Upcountry residents get their water from the East Maui watershed, which is now the subject of highly controversial hearings by the state’s Commission on Water Resource Management. The commission will decide next month how much water will be restored to the streams. This may determine who will get the water.
“Shall the water continue to be used for large-scale agriculture, primarily the HC&S sugar plantation, by residents for domestic use, upcountry farmers and ranchers?” asked KCA spokeman Dick Maye.
