Hāna Library taken off statewide closure list

July 23, 2009
The Maui Weekly
The Board of Education voted Thursday, July 16, to take the beloved Hāna Public and School Library off a proposed list of closures of statewide libraries. East Maui residents were represented by Sen. J. Kalani English and state Rep. Mele Carroll at the Honolulu meeting where the vote was held, along with the Board of Education’s Maui representative, Mary Cochran.

The legislators held that the “library provides essential services to the East Maui community.” Internet access, magazine and newspaper publications along with numerous sorts of books are available to residents who may have no other option due to the geographical location of Hāna. Board of Education members also came to an agreement to save the four other libraries targeted for closure.

The proposed closures were an attempt by state librarian Richard Burns to cut costs during the economic downturn, but it seems as though he will now have to seek other avenues to save money.
