The Maui News - The wait is almost over for the opening of the long-anticipated Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge boardwalk. Refuge Manager Glynnis Nakai revealed last Thursday to The Maui News that the boardwalk could open within the next two weeks. And according to Nakai, the latest delay is a missing “no left turn” sign for the northbound lane of North Kihei Road near the entrance. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service employees have been overseeing the $2.2 million wetland project, which has been under scrutiny regarding its completion. Private contractors finished the 2,200-foot boardwalk nearly two years ago, yet a number of complications have troubled this project, including the completion of the parking lot. The “most significant recent setbacks” came in February, when heavy rains flooded the area where the lot was built. Stay up to date and visit the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge boardwalk project’s Website at www.fws.gov/kealiapond/.
