On Friday, Sept. 18, volunteers are urged and welcome to support a peaceful protest demonstration against restaurants that serve foie gras. The demonstration will be held in front of Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Kihei Town Center from 6 to 8 p.m. A second demonstration will be at Gerard’s Restaurant in Lahaina on Friday, Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. To volunteer, please call event coordinator Barbara Steinberg at 879-0025. The production of foie gras is inhumane to ducks, according to many sources, causing ongoing suffering. Foie gras is factory-farmed—ducks are restrained and force-fed with a long metal pipe is shoved down their throats two to three times each day. Their esophagi are sometimes painfully punctured during the violent force-feedings and access to water is so limited that the ducks vomit from their nostrils often become blind. Fifteen nations in Europe outlawed force-feeding for foie gras. Only by informing the public and elected officials about the inherent cruelty of foie gras will the needless suffering of birds for a mere palate preference end. Please join us for these demonstrations, and ask restaurants that serve foie gras to take it off their menus. Barbara Steinberg |
