The 87th Maui County Fair will be held from Thursday, Oct. 1, to Sunday, Oct. 4, at the War Memorial Stadium Complex. (See sidebar on page two for hours and ticket prices.) This fair is particularly special, as it gives Maui’s friends, families and visitors a great opportunity to leave their economic worries behind and spend some quality time together at a low cost.
Kick off the festivities with the vibrant annual parade on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 4:30 p.m., from Maui Community College to Ka‘ahumanu and Kanaola Avenues.
Look out for four of Maui County’s finest teachers who were nominated by their students to be crowned as 2009 Parade Grand Marshalls.

This year’s theme is “Your Invitation to Fun,” and strives to be a wonderful weekend where our community can come together to enjoy an alcohol-, smoke- and drug-free event that’s educational and exciting. Take a stroll around the fairgrounds to view an abundance of artwork, photos, crafts, flowers and more produced by Maui’s own creative community.
Enter the “Joyzone,” as E.K. Fernandez will once again provide their games and exhilarating rides, including the “never-been-to-Maui,” Dragon Coaster!
The popular Hawaiian group Na Leo Pilimehana, everyone’s favorite uncle, Willie K, and the incomparable Keali‘i Reichel will provide live entertainment. There will also be a Multicultural Heritage Celebration with performances by local groups.
Do you have a spice for life and crave comfort food? Well, then don’t miss the 5th Annual “Who’s Got the Heat?” Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Oct. 3, where contestants test out their culinary skills during this zesty event.
Cool down your tastebuds with the new “Aloha Cherry Truffle Challenge” on Sunday, Oct. 4, where high school students and organizations work in teams (guided by a culinary professional) and compete for cash prizes. Participants must incorporate Roselani’s Aloha Cherry Truffle Ice Cream as the main ingredient in their entries.
Residents are invited to showcase their prized animals in the Livestock & Poultry Exhibit, with youth and adult divisions. Entries will be accepted until Sunday, Sept. 20.
There will be an awards presentation on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m., along with a special appearance by Miss Rodeo Hawai‘i 2009 Ashley Borsum.
