Fire crews from Kula and Makawao responded to a fire on Kini Drive in Ulupalakua last week and were joined by a Hazmat, Tanker and Rescue crew from the Kahului fire station. Fire officials report that the 1,000-square-foot single-story home was fully engulfed upon their arrival. The home had three occupants, and during the clean-up and dousing of remaining hot spots, the remains of a female was discovered by fire personnel. Dental records were used to positively identify the woman, who has been identified as Cheryl Lynn Ledbetter, a 49-year-old resident of Olympia, Wash. Maui Fire Department and Police Arson investigators estimate damages of $110,000 to the dwelling and $30,000 to its contents. Fire and Police investigators are probing the incident to determine if it was criminal or is suspicious in manner. Preliminary reports indicate no foul play.
