The Honolulu Advertiser - Maui officials reopened beaches in Kīhei where two sharks were spotted and a surfer was bitten on Monday, Oct. 19. Earlier in the day, a helicopter saw the sharks near the two-mile stretch of shoreline that was closed after a shark bit a surfer. One of the sharks was a 14-foot tiger shark, officials said. The shark bite happened at about 6 a.m. off Kalama Beach Park at a surf break known as Kalama Bowls. A 54-year-old surfer was bit on the thigh and ankle. He was treated and released from a hospital. Officials posted warning signs and lifeguards patrolled the area warning people to stay out of the water.
