Hale Mahaolu is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist(s) who started a fire that gutted its senior center building under construction at its Ehiku Senior Housing Complex in Kīhei. The suspicious fire was ignited around 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 14. The fire engulfed the main portion of the unoccupied 4,500-square-foot senior center building which was about 90 percent completed. Officials said damage was estimated at $1.5 million to the buildings and $100,000 to their contents. While the fire was a major setback for Hale Mahaolu’s plans to open the second phase of its most comprehensive aging-in-place facility before the end of the current year, Executive Director Roy Katsuda emphasized the positive aspects of the unfortunate incident. “We are deeply moved by the overwhelming support that we have been receiving from the public through telephone calls, letters, emails, personal conversations and generous donations,” he said. “We will be doing everything we can to get the project back on track as soon as possible.” If residents have any information about the incident, contact Maui Police Department Crime Stoppers at (808) 242-6966.
