Civil Unions Bill (HB444) Tabled

February 11, 2010

For those for whom marriage is not an option, the privileges and benefits of “legal” couples are still unobtainable, for now, as the civil unions bill (HB444) was tabled in the Hawai‘i House last month. “I don’t think there’s any question that election year politics played a role in the decision,” said Tony Wagner of Human Rights Campaign. “This could have been a chance for politicians to stand up, not cower away.” Hawai‘i Family Forum (HFF) used their iVote campaign to bring more people together and engage them with politics, as seen here during a rally on O‘ahu. “Obviously, we are not ready for same-sex marriages in Hawai‘i,” said HFF’s Dennis Arakaki. “A lot of people have said it’s about Christians versus the gays, and that is not what this is about.”
